Domain, Website Hosting Transfer Step by Step

For SMEs, in general,
transferring website/email hosting involves three things.

When customers consider to change website hosting provider, Website Solution can help customers to transfer the domain name registration, website content, and e-mail items.

Domain Registration

Case A

If customer registers the domain on yourself, e.g. register via Network Solutions, GoDaddy, or HKDNR, etc, customer may consider to keep the registration at domain registrar, and update the domain DNS as our hosting server. (DNS update takes around 24 – 48 hours to be fully effective)

Case B

If customer’s domain is registered via old hosting company, and customer wants to keep the domain registration at old company. After ordering hosting account, customer may inform old company to update domain DNS as our hosting server.

Case C

If customer’s domain is registered via old hosting company, and customer would like to manage/renew the domain via us in future, it is necessary to proceed a domain transfer process.
Domain Transfer Procedure

.com.hk , .hk domain

  • Check domain registration information at WHOIS
  • Active domain (not expired)
  • Registrant (owner) holder name correct
  • Ask existing provider to get domain authorization code
  • Require 1 – 3 working days to process

International Domain (.COM , .NET , .ORG)

  • Check domain registration information at WHOIS
    status = ok / active
    (no locked, no clientTransferProhibited)
  • Active domain (not expired)
  • Domain WHOIS contact emails are valid
  • Ask existing provider to get domain EPP code (or called domain authorization code)
  • Require 7 – 14 calendar days to process

About Website
We can assist customer to transfer existing website content from 3rd party hosting server for free.
Note: if customer is using 3rd party proprietary platform to build website, e.g. WIX, Weebly, Yola, Web Presence Builder, etc. These websites can ONLY be run in specific servers. Those contents cannot be transferred.
About Email
If customers are using email program (e.g. Outlook, Windows Live Mail, or Thunderbird, etc) and using POP3 to download emails, those email items are already stored in your desktop computer. (Remember to keep regular backup)
If customers are using IMAP to access email (e.g. Smartphone (IMAP), Outlook via IMAP), those emails are stored on email server. In order to keep the same set of email across migration, we can assist customer to transfer the existing email items for free.

(The transfer does not include address book, calendar, or other data)

Service Fees
Domain Transfer:
  • .com , .net , .org: domain transfer with 1 year extension, the fee is HK$170.  Customer may optionally add domain WHOIS privacy protection (HK$60/year)
  • .com.hk domain transfer with 1 year extension, the fee is HK$250
  • .hk domain transfer with 1 year extension, the fee is HK$300
